The exams were postponed by three months
In mid-April 2016, with less than twenty days to go for CGL Tier- I examination, the Staff Selection Board (SSC) announced that the exam had been moved to a far-off date: August 27th, and will go on until 11th September. Tier-II is tentatively postponed to November, and Tier-III and -IV to January 2017. Final results are expected in April 2017. This very welcomed change was followed by changes in exam scheme.

SSC CGL examination is now four-tiered
Tier-I acts as the qualifier to Tier-II, and its score will count towards final merit. In fact, scores of Tier-II and Tier-III will play a deciding role as well. The newly-introduced Tier-III is a 100 mark bilingual Descriptive Paper. It tests Hindi or English essay/passage/letter/application writing skills, and one has to score a minimum of 33 marks to pass it. It replaces the Personality Test cum Interview, which has been quashed for most government jobs. Tier-IV is qualifying only, and is either a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) for the post of Assistant Section Officer in CSS, or a Data Entry Skill Test at speed of 8000 key depression per hour for the post of Tax Assistant. There is no sectional cutoff applicable in any of these.
Changes made to CGL Tier-I
Tier-I is now a computer-based exam, and the OMR based examination mode has been done away with. The maximum possible score is still 200, but the number of questions has been reduced to half, ie. 100 questions which means 25 questions from each of the four areas – General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. 0.5 will be deducted for every wrong answer. Exam time has been reduced from 160 minutes to 75 minutes. Syllabus remains unchanged. Changes made to CGL Tier-II
Tier-II is also now a computer-based exam. There are now four papers of two hours each. Paper-I (Quantitative Abilities) and Paper-II (English Language & Comprehension) are common to all those who make it through. Paper-I has a negative marking of 0.50 marks, while that of Paper-II is 0.25 marks. Paper-III (Statistics) is only for the post of Statistical Investigator Grade-II and Compiler, and has a negative marking of 0.50 marks. Assistant Audit Officer in C&AG is a newly introduced post and a person applying to this has to write and clear Paper-IV [General Studies (Finance and Economics)]. This paper is also of 200 marks, with Finance and Accounts being tested for 80 marks and Economics and Governance accounting for the rest. Every wrong answer reduces 0.5 marks from the final score.
