Opportunities for women in Indian Armed Forces

The tri-services of the Indian Armed Forces, i.e. Army, Navy and Air Force have been recruiting women in the non-medical officer cadre since 1992. Till then, armed forces were all about men. Currently, 2-3 % officers of the Indian Armed forces are women. Every year, increasing number of women are applying for a career in defence. If you are a woman and desire joining the armed forces but are unaware of the different opportunities and eligibility criteria, then here is a quick look them:

Indian Army

Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE):

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds CDSE for entry of female candidates to the Officers Training Academy (OTA). To be eligible for the exam, women candidates must at least have a graduation degree from a recognized university and be between 19-25 years of age (or as specified in the advertisement). On successfully clearing the written exam, candidates are called for an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

NCC cadet entry:

Women NCC cadets between the age of 19 and 25 with a minimum of two years of service in the senior division army and at least B grade in the C certificate examination are eligible to apply for a NCC cadet entry.

Short Service Commission (SSC) – Technical:

Female aspirants with a graduate degree in any discipline of engineering and between 20 and 27 years of age can apply for the SSC-Technical entry.

JAG:

Women candidates with a graduate degree in Law (LLB/LLM) with a minimum of 55% aggregate score, registered with the Bar Council of India/State and between the age of 21 and 27 years are eligible to apply for the JAG entry to the armed forces.

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT):

Conducted twice a year, this exam is conducted for entry to the following branched of the Indian Air Force:

Flying branch

  • Women between 19 and 23 years of age
  • A graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university with 60% aggregate marks
  • And passed Maths and Physics at the 10+2 level

OR

  • A B.E./B.Tech degree from a recognized university with 60% aggregate marks

Technical branch –

Women candidates between 18 and 28 years of age can apply for entry to the technical branch of the Air Force. There are two options available under the technical branch:

Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical):
  • Women with a B.E. from a recognized university with at least 60% aggregate scores
  • Qualified in at least 8 of the 18 subjects notified by the advertisement

OR

  • Cleared section A and B exam of the Associate membership of institution of engineers / Aeronautical Society of India in regular courses.
Aeronautical Engineer (Electrical):
  • Women with a B.E. from a recognized university with at least 60% aggregate scores
  • Qualified in at least 8 of the 18 subjects notified by the advertisement

OR

  • Cleared section A and B exam of the Associate membership of institution of engineers / Aeronautical Society of India / Graduate membership examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers in regular courses.

Ground Duty Branch:

The age-limits as per qualification are as follows:

The following options are available under Ground Duty:

Administration and Logistics:
  • Women with a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university with at least 60% aggregate marks

OR

  • Post Graduate degree/ diploma in any discipline from a recognized university with at least 60% aggregate marks
Education:

Women with Post Graduate degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks.

Accounts:
  • Women with a graduate degree in any commerce discipline from a recognized university with at least 60% aggregate marks

OR

  • Post Graduate degree/ diploma in Commerce (M.Com)/CA/ICWA with at least 50% aggregate marks

Meteorological branch [Non-AFCAT]:

  • Women candidates aged 20-25 years (27 years for PhD candidates)
  • Post graduate degree in any science stream / Maths / Statistics / Geography / CS / EVS / Physics / Geo-physics etc. with at least 50% aggregate marks

AND

  • At least 55% marks both in Maths and Physics at graduation level.

Indian Navy

Executive branch

  • Air Traffic Controller (SSC) – Women between 19.5 and 25 years of age with a graduate degree in any science stream (Physics/ Maths/ Electronics) or M.Sc. in Maths/ Physics/ Electronics.
  • Observer (SSC) – Women between 19 and 23 years of age with a graduate degree in any discipline with at least 55% marks and having studied Maths and Physics at 10+2 level.
  • Law (SSC) – Women between 22 and 27 years of age with a graduate degree in LAW with at least 55% marks.
  • Logistics (SSC) – Women between 19.5 and 25 years of age with a B.E/B.Tech in Computers, IT, Architecture, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Marine engineering OR graduate with PG diploma in material management

Engineering branch

  • University Entry Scheme (UES SSC) – Women between 19 and 25 years of age with a B.E/B.Tech degree in naval architecture / Mechanical / Civil / Aeronautical / Metallurgical / Aerospace engineering with 60% marks
  • Naval Architecture (SSC) – Women between 21 and 25 years of age with a B.E/B.Tech degree in Naval architecture / Mechanical / Civil / Aeronautical / Metallurgical / Aerospace engineering with 60%.

Education Branch:

Women between 21 and 25 years of age with a B.E/B.Tech in Computer Science, IT, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical OR M.Sc in Physics / Maths / Computer application with atleast 50% marks.
